The Ideal Hospitality Leader

Since starting my job at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, I have had the opportunity to observe and learn from some of the best leaders in the hospitality industry. From their leadership qualities, I have come to believe that an ideal leader in the hospitality industry should possess certain qualities. Firstly, an ideal leader should exude confidence, have a clear vision, and be able to inspire and motivate their team to work towards a common goal. Secondly, an ideal leader should have extensive knowledge and expertise in their field, as well as the ability to make informed decisions and solve problems effectively. This requires a continuous effort to stay updated with the latest trends and developments in the industry. Thirdly, an ideal leader should possess excellent people skills, including active listening, empathy, and effective communication. This helps to build strong relationships with team members, customers, and stakeholders, leading to a positive work environment and increased customer satisfaction. Lastly, an ideal leader should have a genuine interest and passion for the industry, as this drives them to continuously improve and innovate.

In addition to these qualities, I believe that an ideal leader should also have a strong desire to share their knowledge and experiences with other emerging professionals. This involves taking on the role of a mentor and providing guidance and support to those who are just starting their careers in the industry. By doing so, they can help shape the industry's future by passing on their skills and expertise to the next generation of leaders.

As for the leader I envision myself becoming, I aspire to be someone who embodies these qualities. I want to be a leader who is able to create a positive and supportive work environment for my team, where they feel valued and empowered to do their best work. I also want to be someone who is able to anticipate the needs and desires of my guests, and is able to create memorable experiences that exceed their expectations. I believe that by cultivating these skills and qualities, I can inspire and lead a future team towards achieving our goals while also creating a positive impact on the industry.

Career Goals

I am the type of person who gets inspired easily, so it is hard to truly define a specific goal that will set up the pathway for my career, especially since it is common in hospitality to branch out into different outlets. Right now, my dream career is to become a Director of Sales and Marketing or Director of Catering and Sales, or something along those lines. Majoring in hospitality and tourism management gives me the learning resources to give back to the local communities that raised me, which is a top priority of mine. So, a job in any outlet where I can service others would be a dream, but I definitely would want to be in a high leadership position. I have not always envisioned myself working in a hotel, but since I do now, I realize that there are many opportunities to grow within. However, I also want to work in an area where I can combine my professional career with my interests. I would eventually like to enter the sports industry and work in the Padres Front Office under the event operations department or hospitality. What initially drew me to this industry was the dynamic and ever-changing environment it provides. Every day is different, and there are always new opportunities to connect with guests, prepare for exciting occasions, and adapt to consumer demands. Sports unite people, and I want to plan and execute events to create lasting memories.

In 5 years, I see myself working as a Special Events or just a general events coordinator, or project manager with Petco Park or anything in-house, like at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, if I decide I want to stick with the organization. I ultimately want to plan and execute events that bring people together and create lasting memories. It is important that I work for a world-class organization or one that is reputable and can provide me with an opportunity to learn and grow in the industry while impacting the local community. I just want to be a part of a team that produces successful and memorable events for everyone involved.

My short-term career goal by the time I graduate is to work for a company that I want to grow with for a long time. I want to gain valuable experience and knowledge in the industry, as well as make the connections that could help me in the future. I am looking for a company that aligns with my values, provides opportunities for growth and development, and has a positive impact on the local community. I want to be an asset to the company and make valuable contributions while also learning and growing in my field.

3 Goals For My
College Journey

1.  I will become more active and involved in school-associated events, specifically with the Payne School’s student organizations.

2. I will take advantage of all the opportunities and resources that are relevant to me and that will help me advance in my academic and professional career.

3. I will step out of my comfort zone to network with other individuals in the industry and maintain these meaningful connections.

Simulation Reflection

The simulations were a great exercise to assess certain qualities in my leadership capability, and they made me aware of what I am great at and aware of areas where I may lack strength. I also think that because each simulation had different objectives and tasks, I learned what job positions could be potential interests of mine. The first simulation tested my team’s innovation skills, having to build a branch of a company from scratch. My greatest strengths from this simulation, per the feedback I was given, include my planning, technical service, coaching and training, and interpersonal communication skills. On the other hand, I was weak in competency areas such as being numberwise, having good time management, and being a strategic decision-maker.

After receiving the feedback I was given from the first simulation, I was determined to improve on the areas that I lacked. I also wanted to maintain consistency with my current strengths for the next simulation. I made three goals to help keep me motivated to do better. They included strengthening my proficiency in the time-management competency area by helping facilitate my group in reaching our objective, improving my numberwise competency by prioritizing the budget and ensuring that my group stays within budget, and consistently adding to the conversation throughout discussions and speaking professionally while I do so.

After receiving the feedback from the second simulation, I felt that I had definitely improved and achieved at least one of the goals I had set for myself. My strengths remained the same, but I had increased my competency in time management skills. Overall, I would still like to improve in all of the competency areas as there is no cap or limit to how proficient you can be.

My Perception & Perception of Others

As a future leader, I am fully aware that managing a team with diverse personalities and varied working styles requires a comprehensive understanding of different behavioral styles, including my own. I am committed to honing this understanding as it will allow me to communicate more effectively with my team members and customize my leadership approach to suit their specific needs and preferences. By doing so, I am confident that I can build stronger relationships with my team and ensure that everyone is working towards achieving a common goal. I am excited about the prospect of using this knowledge to become a successful and well-regarded leader in my field.

The PRINT assessment was a game-changer for me as it had a profound impact on my perception of myself. Through my journey of self-exploration and growth, I have realized the importance of understanding my personality type and gaining insights into my behaviors, both individually and in a group setting. By doing so, I can approach my personal and professional relationships with greater insight and understanding, leading to more productive and fulfilling interactions.

Based on my PRINT assessment results, I have identified my major and minor personality traits, which suggest that I possess strong attention to detail and a structured approach to problem-solving, making me a good fit for positions in the hospitality industry that require these skills. Additionally, my empathetic and supportive nature positions me as an effective communicator and a valuable asset in customer service roles. While my cautious nature may pose a challenge in fast-paced hospitality settings, I am committed to working on improving myself and utilizing my strengths within the industry.

This semester, I have also learned a great deal about myself by considering the perceptions of others. I received feedback from assessors and peers from my simulations, who recognized my ability to be a reliable and supportive team member, always willing to lend a hand when needed. It was also shared that I am always prepared to work and great at communicating, but I do tend to take on a lot of tasks individually when they could be divided and split evenly amongst the group. While feedback has highlighted areas for improvement, I am eager to embrace these opportunities for growth and development.

One other key takeaway from this semester was the importance of building a strong mentor network. Through my mentor relationships, I have gained valuable insights and advice that have helped me navigate challenges and make informed decisions in school and my career. Overall, I am proud of my accomplishments this semester and excited to continue growing and learning in the future.

Development Activity Ideas

Success Indicators:

To measure the success of this journaling activity aimed at improving the spirit of optimism, it is important to identify clear success indicators. The desired outcomes that I would like to gain from this activity could include feeling more optimistic, having a more positive outlook on life, or experiencing greater emotional resilience and less anxiety. On the other hand, objective measures could include using metrics such as using a scale to determine my anxiety levels before and after the activity is over. Additionally, I can use metrics to determine how much I overthink before and after the activity. And lastly, I can use metrics to keep track of the number of times I journaled about positive things.

Kaleidoscope Development Activity

Title:

Daily Reflection Journal: Fostering Mindfulness and Optimism in Life and the Workplace

Background:

Working in the hospitality industry can be quite challenging due to its fast-paced and demanding nature. These challenges can lead to some tough days, which can take a toll on our mental health, causing faster burnout and higher turnover. Journaling can be a valuable tool to help individuals in the hospitality industry overcome these challenges. With this in mind, I have developed a kaleidoscope activity that involves writing daily reflections in a journal, which will be crucial as I navigate through my personal and professional journey and ultimately help me foster a greater spirit of optimism.

Writing in a daily reflection journal is a more mindful approach to becoming self-aware and reflective of my own behaviors, feelings, and moods. I would essentially be collecting data about myself, which can allow me to easily see my progress, identify trends or patterns in my behaviors, set new goals, identify areas for improvement, and track my overall well-being. This activity will be a great outlet to channel my inner feelings, and assess why I think the way I do, as well as behave the way I do, especially considering my anxious nature and tendency to overthink. I can also practice my communication skills through reflective writing, and find ways to be a better strategic decision-maker and continue to self-develop overall.

Description:

The major phases of the development activity will be divided into four sections: Phase One, Phase Two, Phase Three, and Phase Four. In Phase One, I will introduce the daily reflection journal and set up a system for logging moods and feelings throughout the day. In Phase Two, I will focus on writing reflections and entries in the journal, and will also identify additional ways to incorporate mindfulness and optimism into my daily routine. In Phase Three, I will analyze the patterns and trends in my writing, and use this information to identify areas for improvement and set goals for the future. Finally, in Phase Four, I will prepare a final deliverable that summarizes my experience and the benefits I derived from the development activity. The project activities will occur primarily in the workplace and in my personal time outside of work. And no one else will be involved in the project, as it is a personal development activity
